Our local paper, The Oregonian, carried a series on the lack of excellence in our local schools, including our nearby high school, Westview. They did an excellent job of pinpointing causes of the failure of students to achieve...lack of funding, large class sizes, large student populations (Westview has about 2200 students), and the like. One of the most interesting articles told us that 80% of Westview teachers feel they motivate their students to achieve at high levels. Now THAT spurred some conversation around here! Amber and I enjoyed the articles. We wrote the reporter an e-mail and complimented her on her work, explaining the dilemma we faced 18 months ago. She in turn asked if she could print our letter in the Washington County Weekly, a section of our local paper. Here it is! It was on the same page as a point of view by the co-chair of Citizens for Beaverton Schools who is also a member of a statewide steering committee for school funding. Now we'll wait for any repercussions!!! Hugs, Rachelle
